Social perspectives for hazards decision

Abstract
Risk and Reliability techniques have developed to the point where they can provide practical guidance to decision makers. This is especially true in the area of hazards analysis, where low probability, high consequence events present a particularly difficult set of decisions. This session will feature presentations that provide a societal context to engineering decision making in the face of disasters. Invited speakers will be expected to bring social/psychological aspects to the tradeoff decisions society must make when investing for more disaster resistant and resilient communities.
