Want to understand and manage natural hazards processes? Become a Natural Hazards-Manager
The MAS ETH NATHAZ is an interdisciplinary and practice-oriented programme. It focuses on understanding processes relating to natural hazards, evaluating risks and ensuring sustainable management of infrastructure and built environment, taking into account socio-political factors.
The participants will acquire an enhanced knowledge of the processes of natural hazards and their impact, and will learn to understand them, isolated or in interaction with each other. The programme shows what the consequences of human actions can be regarding loss of lives, damages of livelihoods, financial losses, and damages to qualities of the built environment.
Successful candidates will be able to work in public and private sectors relevant to the assessment and management of natural hazards: insurance companies, consulting companies (engineering, geology, hydrology, geography) and federal offices (land use planning, railway, road authorities).

Target group

Specialists in the field of risk assessment or/and risk management in connection with natural hazards who may work in the insurance industry, engineering consulting firms and the public administration.

Start date

Autumn 2012 (17th of September)

Duration

4 semesters; the programme is organized in 4 blocks of one week per semester and ends with writing a Master thesis.

Location

The programme will take place at ETH Zurich. Being matriculated at ETH, you will have access to lots of services.

Requirements

1) Master's degree from an ETH or equivalent in a field related to natural hazards (requirements)
2) English C1

Application

The MAS programme needs a sufficient number of applications to be launched. Applications submitted till 27th of May 2012 will be considered for that decision. Later submission is possible if the MAS programme will be launched definitively (this will be communicated in the first half of June). There is only a limited number of places available (there are currently places available). Use the portal of the Centre for Continuing Education to submit your application!

Deregistration

A deregistration during the 4th week in the first semester is possible. The application fee are not going to be reimbursed and a deregistration fee of 200 CHF has to be paid. After this date the first semester will be charged. A deregistration after the second semester is not reimbursed.

Network for Natural Hazards: The Network for Natural Hazards is a consortium of research groups studying natural hazards and risk in different departments (D-BAUG, D-UWIS, D-ERDW, D-GESS, D-MTEC) with combined expertise in Atmospheric physics, Climatology, Hydrology, Hydraulics engineering, Water management, Risk engineering, Construction engineering, Forest engineering, Engineering geology, Geotechnics, Seismology, Geodynamics, Geodesy, Cartography, Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing, Environmental social sciences and Economics.
