Fire behavior of glued-laminated timber beams

Involved researchers

Abstract

Brettschichtholz_Brand

Adhesives are commonly used to produce engineered wood products such as glued laminated timber beams or cross-laminated timber panels. The load-bearing capacity of these structural timber elements is strongly influenced by the adhesive used. As a consequence, adhesives have to meet requirements regarding strength and durability to ensure the functionality of structural timber elements during the whole lifetime. Also during fire, the performance requirements have to be fulfilled for a certain time period.

For the safe use of glued structural timber elements in fire, important basic data is still missing. Uncertainties with regard to the fire behaviour of glued structural timber elements lead to difficulties in design and application for engineers and authorities. The aim of this research project is the development of a calculation model for the safe design of glued structural timber elements in fire under consideration of the influence of the adhesive used. Thus, in cooperation with the industrial partner, the temperature-dependent reduction of the adhesives’ strength and the influence on the load-bearing capacity will be studied. A comprehensive experimental program accompanied by numerical calculations is planned.
